Large experiments that take place in CERN provide huge amount of data that has to be processed by huge home-made software. This software consists of several modules that have to be developed and debugged separately from different teams. Debug data from these modules are huge enough to require a dedicated module to store them. For the DAQ of the Atlas detector on the LHC experiment, this module is named Information Service. Information Service has its data organized in Partitions which consist of several Servers who hold many entities of Information organized in sets of Attributes. For example debug data about percentage of fill of a buffer may be hold in one of these Attributes.
Information Service Data Logger is a JAVA utility program that registers and receives values of such attributes via Information Service's CORBA Interface. These data can be presented graphically if they are numeric or in textual format. Data can be stored for further analysis. The user can easily configure alarms in a human readible form like:
"If value is more than (to) 50 for (sec) 5 do exec with mail -s "error" my@mail.ml < log.log"
User views and alarms are stored in Profiles that rely in simple XML files. This way a user can quickly switch between different profiles according to the module that is testing at a given time.
For development and documentation I used JBuilder and Together, two professional development tools. This was my first JAVA application and was a complete success. |
